This lens was designed to exclusively use with
digital cameras featuring
sensors and features all of the advantages of Tamron Di products. These
lenses were not engineered to mount on
SLR film and DSLR cameras containing image sensors in excess of 24mm x 16mm. This super wide zoom lens, delivers an extended focal length beginning at 17mm
equivalent 35mm SLR format that is in demand by professional and advanced
photographers using DSLR cameras. The lens contains a totally new optical layout designed for enhanced performance when using a DSLR camera
The Tamron 11-18mm Di-II wide lens produces an approximate 16-27mm 35mm equivalent when mounted on DSLR cameras featuring 24mm x 16mm or less image sensors
I photograph a lot of real estate interiors and the Tamron 11-18 lens is indispensable for interior photography. I've been shooting with this lens for approximately 5 years now and it does the job pretty well. One major issue I have with color fringing when there are lines with high contrast. The lens also experience some minor fisheye type distortion while in the 11-13mm zoom range, however it is easily taken care of with Photoshop. The distortion in less the 14 - 18mm range than the Nikkor 18-70 has at 18mm. Although is not the right lens for photographing people. I consider it to be a good lens for the price.
You may not use this lens often although when the situation requires it, resulting in terrific pictures from tight spaces. I can not imagine that a Nikon lens could fare any better. My pictures always sharp without distortion.

The lens has one element each of HID (High Index/High Dispersion glass) and LD(Low Dispersion) glass to minimize on-axis and lateral
chromatic aberrations that are the greatest hindrance to high optical quality. In addition, the lens uses a high-precision, large clear aperture, glass-molded hybrid aspherical element and two hybrid

• Internal Surface Coating to Reduce Ghosting and Flare
Lens features Internal Surface Coatings (i.e., multiple-layer coatings on cemented surfaces of plural elements) and new multiple-layer coating technology on ordinary elements in order to minimize reflections that occur when light enters through the front element and to reduce image degrading effects caused by the imagers themselves.
• Enhanced Peripheral Illumination
Peripheral light fall-off is minimized when compared with that of conventional lenses for film cameras so that images are uniformly bright from the center to the periphery.
• Di-II Series Design
Design has been improved by adding a gold-colored band between the focus and zoom rings to enhance the appearance and make it stand out as a Di-II lens. The rubber patterns of the zoom and focus control rings have been improved at the same time to compliment the digital camera design style and to provide better handling.
