Introduced in 2008 in 128MB capacity, files recorded onto the WORM cards can be stored up to 100 years, and cannot be altered or deleted. SDXC cards are based on the new SD 3.0 specification, which makes it possible to manufacture cards with storage capacity up to 2 terabytes (TB)3. SanDisk has announced 32GB variants of its Ultra Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and Memory Stick PRO Duo memory cards. The Ultra-branded Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo with read/write speeds of up to 30 MB/s will ship from November 2009 at a price of $279.99 while the Memory Stick PRO Duo is available now for $223.99.

SanDisk has released a series of Extreme Pro CompactFlash cards with the super-fast read and write speeds of up to 90MB/s. The line supercedes the Extreme IV range and will start shipping this week in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities at a MSRP ranging from $300 to $800. The company has also released another line CF and SDHC cards called the Extreme series (replacing the Extreme III series) offering transfer speeds of up to to 60MB/s and 30 MB/s respectively that will be available from 8GB to 32GB with their price ranging from $130 to $375.

IDE (ATA) emulation speed is usually specified in "x" ratings, e.g. 8x, 20x, 133x. This is the same system used for CD-ROMs and indicates the maximum transfer rate in the form of multiplier of the data rate of an audio CD, which is 150 KB/s. , KB/sec where R = transfer rate, K = speed rating. There are different speeds of SD card available. The official unit of measurement is the Speed Class Rating; an older unit of measurement is the × rating.
The Speed Class Rating is the official unit of speed measurement for SD Cards, defined by the SD Association. It is equal to 8 Mbit/s, and it measures the minimum write speeds based on "the best fragmented state where no memory unit is occupied

On 21 May 2009, Panasonic announced new class 10 SDHC cards, claiming that this new class is "part of SD Card Specification Ver.3.0". The × rating is a unit of measurement equal to 1.2 Mbit/s. It is derived from the standard CD-ROM drive speed of 1.2 Mbit/s. Basic cards transfer data up to six times (6×) the data rate of the standard CD-ROM speed (7.2 Mbit/s vs 1.2 Mbit/s). The 2.0 specification defines speeds up to 200×, but unlike the class rating system, does not mandate that x-ratings measure the card's sustained write-speed. For most cards, the maximum read speed is typical faster than its maximum write speed, leading some manufacturers to use read-speed as the ×-rating measurement.
