35mm Camera Lens Knowledge Base

Perhaps the best features about a DSLR camera is its Adaptability. Because a DSLR camera employs exchangeable lenses, one can literally select the best lens possible for the photographic scene. In addition, DSLR lenses create sharper results by far than the lenses built-into point-and-shoot compact digital cameras.

The most important thing to be conscious of when shopping for a camera lens is that they're specific to each brand. In the majority of cases, each lens maker: Canon, Nikon, Sony has its own proprietary lens mount system that's incompatible with all other brands. There are some exceptions such as the Four Thirds System, that employs a universal Four Thirds mount. Olympus, Panasonic and Sigma make lenses for the Four Thirds mount. Olympus and Panasonic and Olympus has also conceive the Micro Four Thirds system, which employs a unique lens mount, although can be used with 4/3 lenses by using an adapter ring. In addition, "third party" lens makers, including Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina, make lenses for varying mounting systems, that include Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony, and 4/3. As a general rule, Third-party lenses are less expensive than the name-brand versions.
