Photojournalists Discuss the Challenges of Disaster Photography
Photographic a disaster - natural or man-made - can be an overwhelming process. Getting a good shot is only a part of the battle, according to a pair of photojournalists interviewed on NPR's Tell Me More.

Part of the challenge, they say, is putting the spill into context alongside hurricane Katrina.

Jackson also goes into detail about the emotional toll that immersing yourself into such a tragedy can take, and how that can affect your photography.

Read this before going on safari

Wildlife Photography: On Safari with your DSLR: Equipment
Photographer and environmentalist Uwe Skrzypczak wrote Wildlife Photography with several goals in mind: to teach the technical aspects and the workflow of digital wildlife photography; to show the beauty of East Africa and his beloved Serengeti National Park, and to educate about its habitat; and to provide a guide for the photographer who is planning to go on an African photo safari and wants to be prepared to capture the finest possible images.

The book, published by Rocky Nook, is distributed internationally by O’Reilly Media, Sebastopol, Calif.

Beginning with digital photography techniques and workflow, Skrczypczak draws upon his own vast experience in wildlife photography to teach about the equipment, the pros and cons of camera types and lenses, and the specific requirements for this demanding task. Also covered are appropriate techniques for exposure and autofocus – the latter being one of the major challenges in wildlife photography. He discusses an “on the road” workflow, the logistics of transporting your gear, and image editing.

The book goes on to cover the practical aspects of wildlife photography. Example images are accompanied by a small set of pictograms showing which techniques are ideal for capturing the specific situation.

Best 5 Camera Bags
How much camera gear to bring with you on whatever journey you are taking is an important issue but what do you put it in?

The answer to that question depends on the answers to several other questions: Are you flying? Hiking? Walking through a crowded city where there might be pickpockets? Are you an aspiring photojournalist? Want to blend in and work inconspicuously? There are different bags for different kinds of journeys and destinations.

You can buy the greatest camera gear available, but if you don't have the appropriate bag to carry it, you won't have it with you. That's where these bags come in: whether you need a kitchen-sink carryall or a compact, subway-friendly traveler, one of these bags or backpacks should stow your gear in great style.

And optically, it provides excellent edge-to-edge contrast and sharpness while correcting for linear distortion, ensuring that straight lines in a photographic subject--such as architecture--remain straight. Better Photography Articles and TipsStopping Down for sharper images
Stopping down refers to the F-stop on the aperture of your lens, and means to change it to a smaller opening. F-stops on a standard 50 mm lens generally range from F2 to F32, where F2 is the largest opening letting in the most amount of light, and F32 is the smallest opening, letting in the least amount of light. Stopping down has a couple of advantages. If you find yourself in a very bright situation, stopping down will allow you a greater range of tones (less contrast) while increasing your depth of field.

This also results in dimmer images at the film plane. Photographers can compensate for this by increasing the exposure time, using a photographic film with a higher ISO rating, or, in digital cameras, increasing the light sensitivity of the sensor.

PMA 2011 to be step with holiday season
Trade body PMA has announced its show will move to September in 2011 and be open to the public for the first time. Traditionally held in the first quarter of the year, the show is being moved to fit with product release and buying periods, following a quiet 2010 show. Its spring scheduling brought it into competition with the CES electronics show (which Canon chose to attend in preference in 2010), which will be avoided with its September 8-10 2011 slot. A September date in 2012 would risk overlapping with the larger Photokina show in Europe, however. For the first time, the show will officially open its doors to members of the public, with enthusiasts able to attend on Saturday September 10th.
