Digital Camera Settings

times a year, each company constantly trying to one up the other. Now they've
gone nuts with the types and sheer number of scene modes being added to the new

Digital rangefinder camera to come soon, brand unknown
UK photographer Jeff Ascough has revealed that he is currently testing a
new stealth camera. But he is under a non-disclosure agreement with the
vendor, so the most he can say on his
Twitter is
that it's a brand new rangefinder.
What Ascough can can say is that the camera is not a Leica. But take note
that he is a Canon Ambassador, so there's a good chance he's testing a Canon
digital rangefinder. At this point of time, we stumbled upon a Singapore
photography forum talking about
two
rumored Fujifilm shooters, one of which has an APS-C-sized image sensor and
possibly incorporating a Leica M mount for lenses.

How to Make a Great Photo
We're often told the best way to improve our layouts is to improve our photography skills. Take a critical look through the magazines and you'll see that good design is important, but great photos are still the key. What makes a great photo? If you'd like to improve your odds of getting great photos while taking
candids and
snapshots.
Getting a great photo is much easier when you do a controlled photo shoot, because all the elements of great photography are carefully arranged. Snapshot photography is a bigger challenge because of its unpredictability, but with a few tips, you can get compelling photos that capture a moment and tell a story.

The Leica 24mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Aspherical Lens is a wide angle

lens designed for high-speed performance. The wide angle view offered by this lens makes it possible to work efficiently in cramped quarters. It adds a more dynamic feeling to close-up pictures and gives landscape photographs significantly more depth.
The lens is optimized for use with the digital M8 camera, and will hardly show any light falloff when set to its widest open aperture (f/1.4). But even when used with a 35mm system, stopping down to f/2.8 will lead to absolutely outstanding image quality. Its bright f/1.4 aperture allows for an extremely shallow depth of field (DOF),
and at a medium f/stop, the focal range is so great that entire scenes can be
reproduced sharply. Because of its floating element design, the very high
resolution is retained even in the close-up range. Street price $6,495 •

Setting the White Balance
on Your Digital Camera
On today's cameras, there are so many menus and settings on digital cameras that it is difficult to learn them all. Most casual photographers learn the basic settings or rely strictly on the automatic modes of digital point-and-shoot and SLR cameras.
With a little experimenting, you will find that you can command great control of your camera and more importantly, your images.
The white balance setting is one that can have a large effect on the outcome of your images. Understanding white balance and learning how to change the white balance setting in your camera can help you turn an average picture into an exceptional picture.

It's Not About The Camera: It's About The Light!
Photography is all
about light.
When you think about it, serious photography is all about the battle for light and shadow. The word "photography", which comes from the ancient Greeks, literally means "to write with light." If you don't understand the role that light plays in photography, then you will have a long row to hoe when it comes to making good images.
Light is the reason we see depth, dimension and texture in
photographs. Light is the reason we see color. Heck, light is the reason we see.

Does
Your Camera Matter?
For decades now, camera and lens companies have spent billions of dollars to
entice our spending through a combination of flattery and illusion. "Release the
power of your creative vision with
Canon cameras and lenses..." -- that sort of thing. And I chose Canon at random for that sentence; virtually every major camera company has been guilty of this kind of manipulation in their advertising. The message is clear - we're all capable of creating photographic masterpieces if only we buy the right equipment to unlock our magic hidden potential. Seen for what they really are, these sorts of advertisements are preposterous. But, by dint of time and widespread exposure, the arrows of these myths have found their marks in the minds, and wallets, of many photographers. Consciously or otherwise, the message has been absorbed by photographers all over the world: "buy the right camera and lenses and you'll make wonderful pictures".
I suspect that myths like this are what have lead many to claim that one's choice of camera or lenses is not important. And, to the extent that such comments are designed to shift our attention away from equipment towards photography itself, I can certainly sympathize with the intention.
Yet such a statement is simply incorrect. In
photography, as in many fields of work, our choice of tools can be important to the work we produce. In support of the "one's camera doesn't matter" theory people sometimes argue that photographer "X" would have made great work whether he was using a
Deardorff or a
Holga. But to advance such a theory is to misunderstand why one talented photographer, intentionally, chooses the
Deardorff and another talented photographer, intentionally, the Holga. Could a given photographer make his or her best work with any camera handed to him or her? Maybe, but probably not. The evidence presented to us by the history of photography, especially as it relates to the cameras various photographers have chosen to use for their specific
work, largely supports the latter answer.
Many may realize, for example, that the 8" x 10"
view camera is often used because of its potential for precise rendering as well as its flexibility with lens movements. Some may realize that the kind of slow and deliberate pace such a camera encourages can also be essential to certain photographers for certain work, or that seeing the subject on a large ground glass can be an important part of the creative process. Yet, some who like to trot out the Holga
camera as a star example in these kinds debates may not realize that the whole
toy camera movement, in the photographic art world, began specifically *because*
of the way these cameras draw.

The Leica 35mm f/2.5 Summarit-M Lens is the wide angle
lens in the Summarit-M class of rangefinder lenses. These Summarit-M lenses are designed to offer traditional Leica optical and mechanical excellence, while positioned at a price level below the current M ASPH lenses. With a maximum aperture of f/2.5, and by applying classical and proven spherical lens designs, these lenses provide excellent quality. These features also result in a very compact design.
This lens has been updated with the "6-bit" coding, which allows the digital M camera to read this information optically and to identify which lens is being used. The camera can then (optionally) apply a "final stage" software based vignetting
correction (for RAW images the lens used is simply recorded, no change is made).

More New Four Thirds Micro Announcements from Panasonic
Panasonic Lumix DMC G2 12,1MP Digital SLR Camera features the

world's
first interchangeable lens system camera with a touch-screen swivel LCD. The
G2 replaces the first Micro Four Thirds camera, the G1 (released in November
2008), this time with 720p video recording plus an articulated 3-inch
460,000-dot touch-screen, which is used for camera control, picking focus
points by pointing, and browsing photos by swiping your finger. There is
also a high-resolution 1,440,000-dot electronic viewfinder, with an
automatic sensor that detects when the camera is held to your eye.

Panasonic Lumix DMC G10 12,1MP Digital SLR Camera. The Lumix
DMC-G10's
"World's First" claim centers around the fact that it's the current lightest
digital interchangeable lens system with a viewfinder. That's a stretch, and the
G10 looks like the new Olympus E-PL1's direct competition. The G10 shares a
sensor and most still shooting specs with the G2. The LCD is also a 3-inch
460,000-dot screen, but without touch capability or a hinged mount. 720p movie
recording is supported, but only in Motion JPEG format, and with mono sound
recording. There is a built-in electronic viewfinder, but it is a
lower-resolution version than the G2. The size is identical to the G2, the
weight 1.2 oz (35g) lighter. Panasonic no longer provides pricing and
availability information when it makes product announcements. This information
will be released separately 30 days before the product ships.- Announced Mar 7,

35mm SLR Film Lenses on Digital SLR
Cameras

In
most cases, if you have a lens for a fairly recent 35mm SLR camera, it can
be used on a new digital SLR from the same maker. (
See
entire article on the various camera brands for specific details about using
existing lenses on new cameras.) If the 35mm camera lens produces good,
sharp, contrasty images on film, it will produce good digital photos, too.
One big difference is the angle of view. The imaging sensor in most digital
cameras is smaller than 35mm film, measuring about 23 x 16mm. Therefore,
wide-angle lenses for 35mm camera are not as wide when used on a digital
camera, but telephoto lenses are stronger. With 35mm cameras, a 50mm lens is
the “normal” focal length that gives you about the same view as the human
eye.

Lens has an amazing focal range coupled with silent focus and electronic aperture adjustments, making this lens perfectly suited for all photo and video applications. Adopting the Micro Four Thirds
System standard, the lens offers a wide and long zoom range that is equivalent

The
Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 Aspheric G-Series Lens
is a large-diameter wide-angle f/1.7

20mm (40mm in 35mm camera equivalent) manual focus lens.
Micro Four Thirds
The lens operates a unique manual focus system which drives the focusing group indirectly via the lens's autofocus motor. The feel of the manual focus ring remains the same whether the camera is set to auto or manual focus which can be problematic in some shooting scenarios. The advantage is that turning the manual focus ring quickly makes very fast initial adjustments, but then turning it slowly allows very fine focusing.
This lens produces bright photos with a dramatic soft focus even in dimly lit locations. Its compact, easy-to-carry size is also ideal for capturing everyday scenes and snapshots.
Street price $400.
