Review: Leica Super Wide Angle 21mm f/2.8 Elmarit M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens (6-Bit, Updated for Digital) This lens is distinguished by uniform sharpness and minimal distortion across the entire image area even at full aperture. This was achieved with, among other factors, a lens element with an aspherical surface. The lens makes highly dramatic effects possible, like monumental foregrounds, strongly receding backgrounds and a wide horizon. With this lens, focusing and metering are performed by looking through the camera's viewfinder, while the actual framing is checked with an accessory viewfinder #12008 that mounts in the camera's hot-shoe. - Black   Street price $3,795 •

Forget the pixel count and look for the best features in these miracles of miniaturization!

It no longer matters about how many megapixels a Digital Camera Review by Gene Wright boasts. That number now is irrelevant since any 8MP + compact digital cameras is enough resolution for big blow-up prints. What's up with all these 14MP compact cameras? Dozens have been introduced in recent weeks. Hasn't anyone paid attention to Mason Resnick's rants about megapixel madness? 14MP are a lot to cram on a tiny compact camera sensor.

Drawing showing the relative sizes of sensors used in digital cameras, including Four Thirds System. The smallest in green is the normal Digital Compact sensor size

14MP compact digital cameras prove, once again, that hype and marketing trumps actual technological need. Don't be impressed. 8MP does just fine. The following features and capabilities are more important to look for than 14MP in a compact digital camera:

  • Lag time: Does the camera hesitate before taking the picture when you press the shutter release? Most inexpensive ones do. You pay for short lag time.
  • Smarts: Most compact cameras offer an overabundance of scene modes, and the newest models have some variation of "Smart Auto," which analyzes the scene and determines which scene mode combination of settings will give you the best exposure--all in a fraction of a second.
  • Face recognition: Many newer cameras can identify faces in a scene and optimize exposure for them. Some will even warn you if your subject blinked!
  • Ruggedness: Once upon a time, if you dropped a camera or got it wet, it was dead. Now a new generation of ruggedized cameras are starting to hit the market so if you're a spaz or have an active lifestyle, this is an essential feature.
  • Advanced features: If you already have a DSLR or simply like taking control of the camera from the camera, some models have manual exposure and focus overrides as well as other advanced features, so you can get the benefits of a DSLR without the bulk.
  • Viewfinders: These days, they are only available in a handful of compact cameras, mostly made by Canon. An entire generation of point-and-shooters has never peered through an optical viewfinder, and thinks holding the camera a foot or more from their faces while shooting is the normal way to take pictures. Few realize how holding a camera to your face and that peering through the viewfinder as you shoot creates extra support and reduces chances for shaky pictures.
  • Image Stabilization: With both Optical and Digital Image Stabilization. The shooter has the option of simply using Optical Image Stabilization to help reduce blur caused by hand shake, ideal for well lit environments, or choosing Dual Image Stabilization and combining the strengths of Optical and Digital Image Stabilization by activating them simultaneously. Dual Image Stabilization is ideal for low-light environments where the use of a flash is not desired.
  • Wide-angle Zoom: Gives users the ability to capture more of a desired image or scene into a single shot, paving the way for greater creativity and flexibility while shooting. A 10x optical zoom is also key tool which allows users to capture images from a significant distance. A 24mm-240mm focal length (35mm film equivalent) is essential for those consumers who are unaware of what their next shooting scenario may be.

New: Sigma announces Sigma DP1x 14MP FOVEON CMOS Sensor Digital Camera
PMA 2010: Sigma has announced the DP1x digital compact camera, a revised version of its DP1 large-sensor compact camera. Sigma get serious with filling in the holes of it's own and competitor's lenses

New: Sigma reveals 'FLD' glass
PMA 2010: Sigma has launched into PMA with a number of interesting new products. Sigma has also taken the opportunity to reveal a bit more about its new 'FLD' glass, which is used in several of the company's lens designs simultaneously unveiled at PMA. Standing for 'F' Low Dispersion, the material is claimed to have performance equivalent to fluorite glass, but at a more affordable price. Its optical characteristics apparently allow excellent correction for residual chromatic aberration, while its lower density compared to traditional optical glass allows lighter lenses. It's used in the company's new 8-16mm, 17-50mm. and 70-200mm lenses.

New: Sigma goes ultrawide with Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM Lens
PMA 2010: Sigma's widest-angle rectilinear lens yet made especially for APS-C DSLRs, in the form of the 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM. Essentially an equivalent of the company's 12-24mm lens for full-frame, this features a disorientating-wide angle of view of 121 degrees for exaggerated perspectives. It has a built-in petal shaped hood, HSM focusing with full-time manual override, and a minimum focus of 24cm. It will be available to fit Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sigma and Sony SLRs.

New: Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM Lens
PMA 2010: Next on Sigma's extensive release list is an image-stabilized fast standard zoom for APS-C SLRs. The 17-50mm EX DC OS HSM offers a more competitive slightly wider angle of view than the company's previous models in this class, and alongside optical stabilization also adds a hypersonic autofocus motor for users of all mounts (Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sigma and Sony). It uses two elements made from Sigma's new 'FLD glass', plus two glass mold and one hybrid aspherical elements, to reduce aberrations. The minimum focus distance is 28cm across the entire zoom range, giving a maximum magnification of 0.2x, and the 77mm filter thread does not rotate on focusing.

New: Sigma stabilizes 50-500mm ultra-telezoom SIGMA APO 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens
PMA 2010: Sigma upgrades the popular 50-500mm ultra-telephoto zoom with much needed Optical Stabilization - a welcome addition to such a long lens. Again Sigma claims the OS offers up to four stops benefit, and works with Sony and Pentax SLRs as well as Canon, Sigma and Nikon models, with the stabilized viewfinder image aiding in focusing and composition. The all-new optical design uses 22 elements in 16 groups, including four SLD glass elements, but the filter size which has has grown to match the lens to a whopping 95mm.

New: Sigma launches stabilized Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM telezoom Lens
PMA 2010:  The APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM, an image-stabilized fast telezoom with ultrasonic-type silent focusing that provides a direct alternative to recent arrivals from Canon and Nikon. The all-new optical design uses two elements made of Sigma's newly-developed 'FLD' glass (plus three of SLD glass) to reduce aberrations, a 9-blade circular aperture for attractive bokeh, and features full-time manual focus override. The Optical Stabilization system promises up to four stops benefit when hand-holding, and like other recent Sigma lenses, can be used by owners of Sony and Pentax cameras (the lens will also be available in Canon, Nikon and Sigma mounts). Last but not least, a dedicated adapter that extends the length of the hood for APS-C users is supplied as standard.

New: Sigma announces Sigma 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM Lens
PMA 2010: Sigma has announced the 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM, a large-aperture short telephoto lens which is bound to pique the interest of budding portraitists. Featuring a hypersonic focus motor with full-time manual focus override, the lens uses a 9-blade diaphragm for attractive background blur, and has a minimum focus distance of 85cm. It comes with a lens hood adapter for ASP-C/DX users that extends the length of the hood to give more effective shading, and will be available in mounts for Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sigma and Sony SLRs.
