Quick, Precise Shooting in Available Light

Sony 50mm f/1.4 Lens The Sony SAL 50mm f/1.4, an ultra-brilliant standard lens for quick, precise shooting in available light. This lens provides tremendous clarity and visual preciseness even using a full open aperture when shooting indoors or in poor-light and twilight situations. When mounted on a Sony APS-C DSLR camera body, this lens becomes a 75mm focal length midrange telephoto (similar to a 35mm SLR film camera), and benefits from the Super SteadyShot image stabilizer system located in the camera body to diminish blurring from unstable hands.

The big f/1.4 aperture gives photographers the ability to acquire more illumination in dark situations, and is perfect for hand-held photography without using flash, to sustain the ambiance or in environments where there is no flash allowed.

An f/1.4 lens is not usually as efficient as the same manufacture's f/1.8 or f/2 lenses, even when both are stopped down to f/5.6. the lens with the wider aperture is heaver and more expensive, so don't choose it as your standard unless you are planning a great deal of photography poor light conditions. There' plenty of reasons for using a wide aperture, but avoid buying a lens with an aperture wider than you need.

In the broadest of terms it's not unlike its Nikon, Canon, and Pentax counterparts; as befits a top notch prime it provides excellent quality images when stopped down, although struggles somewhat when shot wide open, showing several common issues like bokeh chromatic aberration, corner softness, halation, and vignetting on a full frame. Additionally, at the widest apertures between f/1.4 to f/1.7, visible "halos" encompassing contrasting edges when shooting in very bright conditions.

Another slight issue is that it's a great 35mm SLR focal length, although a rather odd length on the Alpha APS-C. It's somewhat long to be a "normal" lens, while somewhat short as a portrait lens.
