A Compact Everything-in-one Zoom Lens
Sony Z SAL-1680 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T DT Zoom Lens
The Sony DT16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 Zeiss Lens is a 5x autofocus professional-grade zoom lens engineered for Sony Alpha and Minolta DSLR cameras. The optics are optimized for the lesser diameter APS-C image circle employed on DSLR cameras.
A Carl Zeiss' optical layout combined the anti-flare T* coat employed on this lens to help minimize flaring while increasing contrast. When mounted on an
APS-C DSLR camera, the focal length becomes 24-120mm. It's a compact everything-in-one zoom lens, which is ideal for portraits, snapshots, interiors or outdoor scenes.
The build is really cheap, which one could live with. But what impossible to endure is the unacceptable vignetting and the loose build intolerances to which the lens was manufactured so that even mounting a slim B+W UV 62mm filter on the lens, the filter can actually be seen when photographing at 16mm. If you're accustomed to and insist upon the quality of build which goes hand in hand with the optical accomplishment of a genuine Zeiss, pass this lens by and hope that more high performance optics are coming down the road to mount on Sony full frame cameras. Or take a look at the Nikon ZF mount version. Note! Not congruent with 35mm SLR or "full-frame" DSLR cameras.
