Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG Macro HSM Lens

Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG Macro HSM Lens

Description

Ideal lenses for Digital SLR Cameras while retaining suitability for traditional 35mm SLRsThe Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG MACRO HSM Lens. This large aperture zoom lens has improved optical performance and retains close-up ability with a minimum focusing distance of 39.4" / 100cm, and maximum magnification ration of 1:3.5.

This lens is suitable for taking all type of subjects such as portraits, landscape, and close-up pictures. Two SLD "Special Low Dispersion" and three ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations.

High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. The super multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting.

This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which gives this lens the capability to autofocus with all Nikon DSLR cameras (including the D40, D60, D3000 and D5000 series).and ensures a quiet and high-speed AF as well as full-time manual focusing capability. The lens design incorporates an inner focusing and inner zooming systems. The overall length of the lens does not change during focusing and zooming, ensuring convenient handling. A removable tripod collar (TS-21) is included as a standard component.

HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor)
This lens uses a motor driven by ultrasonic waves to provide a quiet, high speed AF. With conventional auto-focusing, auto-focus is driven by electromagnetic force of a DC-motor, gear and shaft mechanism. However, Ultrasonic Oscillation Energy operates the HSM lens and creates high-torque drive. Since this motor has no reduction gears, it has much quicker response to start and stop compared to DC- motor lenses. HSM system has virtually silent auto focus function, very quick responsive auto focus function and "full-time" manual focus, wherein AF can be overridden without disengaging the AF mode altogether

HSM means this lens will autofocus on Nikon D40/D40x, Nikon D60, Nikon D3000, Nikon D3100 and the Nikon D5000 DX Cameras

DG (DG Lens)
This DG lens is designed to work on 35mm DSLR film cameras and digital cameras with 'full frame sensors. it can also be used on the cropped sensor camera as the image circle it casts on the sensor is larger than needed.

The DG designation indicates that the lens has been optimized for use with digital SLR cameras. The DG lenses feature improved (more even) light distribution from image centre to edge, especially at maximum aperture, compared to conventional fast wide-angle lenses. This is important in digital photography, but is also useful in 35mm photography, especially when slide film is used. The lens elements also utilize Sigma’s super multi layer coating which reduces flare and internal reflections from the highly sensitive surface of image sensors.

Conv (APO Teleconverter EX)
This lens can be used with the APO Teleconverter EX. It can increase the focal length and will interface with the camera's AE (automatic exposure) function. When this lens is used with the optional 1.4x EX DG APO or 2x EX DG APO Tele Converters, it becomes a 98-280mm F4 AF telephoto zoom lens or a 140-400mm F5.6 AF telephoto zoom lens respectively.

EX (EX Lens)
The exterior of this lens is EX-finished to denote the superior build and optical quality, and to enhance its appearance.

Features

The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX APO Macro HSM telephoto zoom lens has a large maximum aperture of f/2.8 which remains constant throughout the zoom range, an improved optical performance, macro capabilities, and is optimized for digital SLR cameras. It also features super multi-layer coating, which reduces flare and ghosting.

This Macro lens has improved macro capability, with a minimum focusing distance of 39.4" (100 cm) and maximum magnification of 1:3.5. All zooming and focus movement is achieved internally, allowing for a constant length and great resistance to dust and moisture. It comes rendered in a hard coated, baked black EX crinkle finish.

The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function as well as full-time manual focusing capability for Sigma, Canon, and Nikon mount lenses.

This lens can also be used with the 1.4x EX or 2.0x EX APO Tele Converters (optional), becoming a 98-280mm f/4 autofocus telephoto zoom lens or a 140-400mm f/5.6 autofocus telephoto zoom lens respectively.

• DG Lens Design The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to Best Prices for the best color balance while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor.

• HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) Hyper Sonic Motor provides smooth, silent AF with fulltime manual focus override.

• ELD & SLD Elements This lens uses three ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) elements and two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements for utmost correction against chromatic aberrations.

• Tripod Mount A rotating tripod mount can be conveniently detached if required.

Great value without any real compromise, July 16, 2009

By B. Press (Ellicott City, MD USA)

This is just a great lens. The HSM focuses very fast and the build quality is excellent. The tripod mount is durable and cleverly designed. It balances well on a monopod. The ability to nail long shots indoors (like on stage or gymnasium sports) has been fantastic.

Sure, I'd love to have image stabilization but I wouldn't want to pay $1000 for it.

Plus, it pairs very nicely with the Sigma 1.4x teleconverter with only the loss of one f-stop and maintains the fast focusing.

sigma 70-200 mm f/2.8 DG HSM II Macro Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR, June 22, 2009

By bama girl

I purchased the camera to take pics of my kids playing basketball/softball and also still portraits of them. I was amazed at the clarity of the action pics. Little to no blur with the pictures. I feel this is money well spent. The macro feature is awesome! It really brings out the detail in close up pictures. The autofocus mode on the first lense I received didn't work. I returned it to ebay and received a replacement lense in a very timely manner. The replacement lense was just as expected. This lense is great. Not the best in low light situations but overall a great lense.

Press Release

APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG / HSM

Fast maximum aperture telephoto lens optimised for digital SLR cameras.

Four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements produce excellent image quality throughout the entire zoom range.

New coating and lens design minimise flare and ghost.

Inner focusing and inner zooming systems retain external dimensions for ease of handling.

The HSM models provide silent, high-speed and precise auto-focusing with full time manual focus override.

Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the launch of the new APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG / HSM lens.

This telephoto zoom lens has a large maximum aperture of f2.8 which remains constant throughout the zoom range and it is optimised for digital SLR cameras. Two pieces of SLD (the special low dispersion) glass in the front lens group and another two in the rear group offer excellent correction of chromatic aberration. High optical performance is demonstrated throughout the entire zoom range.

The new multi layer lens coating and lens design reduce flare and ghost, which is a common problem with digital cameras and also creates an optimum color balance.

An inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the petal-type lens hood supplied and circular polarising filters. Since focusing and zooming do not change its overall length, ease of handling and operation is assured. A rotating tripod mount can be conveniently detached if required. The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function as well as full-time manual focusing capability for Sigma, Canon, and Nikon-D mount lenses.

The lens can be used with the 1.4x EX or 2.0x EX Apo Tele Converters (optional), becoming a 98-280mm F4 Autofocus telephoto zoom lens or a 140-400mm F5.6 Autofocus telephoto zoom lens respectively.
