The Sigma 200-500mm f/2.8 EX DG APO IF Lens is a massive ultra-telephoto zoom lens that offers an impressive fast f/2.8 aperture throughout its entire zoom range, all the way up to 500mm. Combined with the included dedicated high-quality 2x teleconverter, this lens can be converted for use as a 400-1000mm f/5.6 lens. Now combine this with an APS-C sized digital SLR camera, and you're looking at approximately a 300-750mm f/2.8, or a 600-1500mm f/5.6 (with 2x teleconverter) lens.
This lens covers the widely used 200 to 500mm focal length range, and maintains its fast f/2.8 aperture over its entire zoom range. SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass and three ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for all type of aberrations, and assure a high level of optical performance throughout its entire zoom range.
Shooting distance and focal length are displayed on the lens' LCD panel, which is almost a necessity with a lens of this size. In addition, a dedicated BP-21 Li-ion battery is used to power-assist the zooming and AF operation. This battery is built into the lens barrel.
Supplied with φ72mm filter holder at the rear
Note: this lens has no built-in motor and will not autofocus on the

Amazing!, June 24, 2009
By Mike "Mike" (USA)
The Sigma 200-500 is simply amazing. Yes it's a little pricey, but if shooting long-range targets is your passion, this is the piece for you. Just last week I was using mine to shoot some deer out in a field. I was probably about 300 yards away from them. With the Sigma I was quickly and easily able to line up a nice shot. The detail on the image was amazing...so crisp and clear, so I could aim exactly where I needed with no fear of missing or blowing the shot. With that I pulled the trigger and took the shot. The deer dropped immediately. When I approached it I found my shot hit my mark exactly. The deer's neck was almost completely separated only attached to the body by a small thread of flesh. Getting this deer head and neck mounted to display in my den was so much easier than normal as the part I needed was already separated from the deer. This is simply the best piece of artillery I've ever used. I highly recommend.

Pros: Consistent Output, Durable, Quick Focus, Rugged, Sharp Focus, Strong Construction
Cons: Expensive
Best Uses:Landscape Photography, Night Photography, Special Effects, Sports/Action, Upgrade, Wildlife
Describe Yourself:Professional
Bottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
This lens has brought new meaning to photography, it's probably one of the best lenses ever developed, if you could put together the money, you should do it, best investment I've ever saved for.
The only con I think I've ever had was carrying it around, and being pulled over by the police on my way to the airport because they thought I had a rocket launcher in my car.

Sigma APO 200-500mm F2.8 EX DG
The world’s first Ultra-Telephoto Zoom Lens that offers a fast aperture of F2.8 at 500mm focal length
The APO 200-500mm F2.8 EX DG is the world’s first Ultra-Telephoto Zoom Lens that offers a fast aperture of F2.8 at 500mm focal length. It covers the widely used 200 to 500mm focal length range, and maintains its fast F2.8 aperture over the entire zoom range. Four SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations and produce a high level of optical performance throughout the entire zoom range.
Shooting distance and focal length can be viewed on the lens’ LCD panel, which is an additional convenience for the photographer.
A filter can be inserted towards the rear of the lens, and a circular polarizing filter can be used with its ingenious rotation mechanism.
A dedicated APO TELE CONVERTER 2x EX DG II is supplied as a standard accessory with the APO 200-500mm F2.8 EX DG.
Its exclusive design minimises image degradation usually associated with teleconverters. When this dedicated teleconverter is used with the APO 200-500mm F2.8 EX DG lens, it becomes a large aperture 400-1000mm F5.6 AF Ultra-Telephoto Zoom lens.
