Sigma SD1 46MP premium Camera availability and Pricing
October 13, 2011, Sigma of Germany is releasing a burl wood-veneered edition of the high-end SD1 DSLR. The 'Burl Wood version' places the emphasis on the upscale appeal of the cameral by adding a veneer casing made of Amboyna Burl, a decorative and expensive veneer made from the Red Curley Narra tree. The heartwood ranges from light yellow, into a brick red color. The Amboyna grain is wavy, crossed or interlocked and these abnormalities create mottle, curly fiddle-back, and ripple appearances.
To make the case requires around 60 hours for cutting, milling and polishing. This special limited edition will be shown in ten examples in a body-only, at a suggested €9,999 selling price
Sigma pricing on the SD1 15x3MP APS-C DSLR, stating it is targeting users currently photographing with medium format. The unique properties about this camera compared to other competitors is it's 15MP Foveon image sensor that employs 3 stacked sensors, allowing each image 46 million particles of color information, and not just one color for each pixel as employed in conventional, 'Bayer' devices.
This supposedly helps bestow sharper images, truer colors, and less artifacts as compared to traditional image sensors (but also creates 45MB Raw image files). The camera can capture images 5 fps, includes a 460,000 dot 3.0" LCD screen plus an 11-point autofocus system. The image sensor has to be out in orbit to rationalize shelling out almost $10,000 on a crop factor 1.5x APS-C 15MP DSLR camera, since photographers can obtain the Pentax 645D 40mp medium-format camera for the identical price.
This is Sigma's first step away from their 4.7x3MP image sensors employed in its current DSLR and DP model large sensor fixed lens compact cameras. SD1 cameras will begin shipping from the latter part of June and carry a price of $9,700 and will take over the title as Worlds Highest Pricied APS-C DSLR Camera
