Real Estate Lens Guide For Nikon
Cameras
"Canons are designed by engineers, Nikons are designed by photographers"
A Real Estate Lens is a wide lens. On a full-frame digital SLR or 35mm film, a wide angle lens is generally considered anything with a focal length of 35mm or less.
On a cropped DSLR, most people aren't impressed by a wide-angle effect until you get down to 24mm. Wide angle camera lenses start to get expensive at 20mm ($500) and wider. So good compromises these days are are probably a fixed 24 ($250) or a high-quality 16-35 zoom ($1500). See the
Fast Camera Lens at a Glance page for an idea of what
lenses are available.
Digital Crop Factor: Placing a 10-20mm lens on a digital body with a smaller sensor size produces a picture that is the same as the picture taken by 35mm frame body with a 15-30mm lens. This is
known as the “digital multiplication factor”, or sometimes called the “Field Of View Crop Factor”. It is the size of the digital sensor, which decides the effective 35mm equivalent focal length of the lens. Various brand digital cameras have different multiplication factors.
(Nikon is 1.5, Canon is 1.6 and the Canon 30D is 1.3) These factors are an advantage to photographers
taking telephoto shots, but a disadvantage when shooting wide-angle photos with
a digital SLR. It could also be a waste of an expensive lens that will only be
using the center of the lens.

Nikon
AF-S DX Zoom- NIKKOR 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED
Designed for use with Nikon's DX cameras. This is a great real estate lens. It
is a fairly light lens at 1.07 lbs. The Nikon lens is the best of the wide
angle lenses, but the differences are slight. It sells for around $875 discount price.
If this lens is out of your price range, try the Sigma 10-20mm or the Tokina
12-24mm for about
half as much at $480 discount price. You can make better photos by getting
the Sigma or Tokina and spending the money you save on a photo trip. Buy from: Amazon

Nikon AF NIKKOR 14mm f/2.8D ED.
DX or FX. This is Nikon's widest lens. It is
bright and fast with an F/2.8 apeture and expensive, around $1,420. This
lens is front heavy on a D40 or D70 but balances nicely on a Nikon Pro
Camera. Conclusion: State of the art
performance, a great tool for pros and other advanced Nikon
photographers wanting the ultimate in wide angle coverage and speed
without distortion. I'd get it at Amazon

a big, heavy lens at 35.3 oz and it's expensive at $1,600 discount camera
store price. I would get it at

Sigma
10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM
- This is my lens of choice for a real estate lens.
This lens lets me go places that an 18-55 kit lens will not. It takes photos
of small kitchens, small bathrooms, and small back yards. An extra 1 to 2mm
over the 12-24mm Nikor or the 11-16mm Tamron makes a difference in small
areas. At f/4 it is a little slow
for interiors. it needs lots of natural light or a strong bounce flash. If
you try to use the built-in flash, you're going to get a large shadow on the bottom of your pictures. This is because the
lens is so wide the on-camera flash cannot see over the lens and casts a shadow
on the picture. To get around this limitation, I
use an inexpensive Nikon SB400 as a bounce flash with success when ceilings are light colored and
are 10 feet or less. The Sigma 10-20mm sells for around $480 discount price or about half
as much as the Nikkor 12-24mm. It weighs 16.6. For really wide angle work, there isn't a better choice. The Nikkor 12-24mm doesn't go as wide, nor is it quite as sharp at the widest end. Mounts available for Canon, Nikon, Pentax,
Sigma, and Sony. Get it from: |
