The new AF-S Nikon 85mm f/1.8G is a compact quick FX-format medium telephoto prime lens. Although engineered for FX-format Digital SLR cameras, it's equally at home on any of the Nikon DX-format Digital SLRs. Combined with a mid-range telephoto layout and a fast aperture of f/1.8 make it a perfect choice for capturing both still photos and High Definition video in poor light situations. Available light photographers will fall in love with the wide-open result when capturing intimate portraits; Subjects in-focus will always stay sharp, while backgrounds containing distractions will melt away into a soft pleasing blur. When used with a DX-sensor DSLR, this Nikon 85mm prime provides a perceptible focal length of about 128mm.
The lens features a Silent Wave Motor (AFS) plus Internal Focus for quick and stealth autofocus while the lens length remains the same, thus maintaining operating distance throughout the entire focusing range. A Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations in place of gears for focusing the lens, delivering beautifully accurate, smooth, and silent autofocus function.
When you need fine manual focusing, simply rotate the focusing ring. The included M/A mode setting provides a totally seamless override with barely any time lag. The Nikon SIC (Super Integrated Coating) enhances light transmission and delivers improved color consistency with diminished flare.
The 85mm Nikon f/1.8 weighs very little, fast, and effortless to carry around. It weighs 8.0 oz which is much lighter than the revered 85mm Nikon f/1.4 lens - shooters with a favor for prime lenses can leave this new optic in their camera bag without wavering - it's light enough and small enough to take whit you everywhere anytime!
