Description
f/1.4 lenses
aren't used for their optical perfection, only because they are f/1.4.
T
he now legendary Nikkor 35mm f/1.4
prime lens that was introduced in 1969
specifically for
press photography. It was and still is among the fastest
wide
angle lenses available. High speed, high image quality, focusing down to 12
inches and rugged construction - this lens has it all, a versatile, ultra-fast wide-angle lens
that captures classic images with super-sharp results. Beautifully built (like most of Nikon's AI/AIS lines), very sharp, good colors, nice contrast and
very pleasant bokeh.
On a D90 this lens thinks it's a 50mm, making it a contender as walk-around lens.
Excellent in
low light since sharpness is pretty good wide open.
The sharpness can be attributed to the fact that this is not a zoom lens. To get sharp and well-saturated pictures, one should use a
prime lens as opposed to a
zoom. Prime lenses have
fixed focal lengths. The reason for the sharpness is
that prime lenses do not need a large number of glass elements to focus at something, zooms usually do.
But dont read me wrong, there are many well-designed and well-made zooms with excellent optics, but usually those are the exception to the rule. The 35mm f/1.4 uses 9 elements arranged in 7 groups.
(For example, the Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 has 13 elements arranged in 10 Groups.) The
35mm f/1.4 lens is perfect for
traveling, weighting only 14oz, and only 2.7 inches long. It is excellent for just about any other purpose. It is
just one of those legendary Nikkors people rave about. For those of you hooked
on AF, you just might be missing out
