ikon Ed 180 2.8 Als Manual Focus Nikkor Lens is a sharp and wonderful lens. The AIS version
is even better than the 70-200 f2.8 at 180 mm. Its not as free from CA as the 70-200 AFS is but its just resolving more that the 70-200.
If you need fast AFS, go for the 70-200. But the lens is well made and to the mechanical standard of most AIS lenses which makes it a joy to use.

Nikon had a long history of success with their 180mm f/2.8 lenses. Countless historic pictures were shot with these lenses. The ED AIS version is the last and best model, with its own optical design and the benefit of Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass making it the sharpest Nikon manual focus 180mm lens. This lens was the first telephoto to use ED glass (1980). Its use of ED glass is clearly identified on the exterior by a narrow gold ring on the exterior.
