N ikon 135 2.8 Al-s Nikkor Lens. This lens is relatively small and light, but like all the other prime Nikkor telephoto lenses, it is tack sharp wide open and the focusing is is smooth and deliberate.  While other AI focal lengths offer stronger performers at a higher price, this optic will still outperform many new consumer AF designs. As a typical AI Nikkor, this lens does well. Stopping down 1-2 stops improves sharpness and contrast, but it is useable wide open under the right conditions. All its optical faults can be easily remedied in Photoshop or a similar image editor.

Both Ai and Ai-S versions of this Nikkor 135mm f/2.8 lens have a solid mechanical construction. Most photographers might agree newer Ai-S Nikkor lenses generally exhibit slightly higher contrast than older Ai series Nikkor lenses. However, it is entirely an individual preference over such optical behavior the lenses present. Among the available options within the 135mm focal length, the Nikkor 135mm f/2.8s lens featured here seemed represents the best investment especially when you summarizing all variable factors such as price, performance and secondary factors such as portability into your evaluation.

Features

This telephoto lens with its moderately fast maximum aperture can be a logical choice if you are looking for a high quality telephoto lens to handle your all round photographic needs, in particular if cost of investment is an issue to you. However, Nikon did have another cheaper lens with similar lens configuration in the Nikon Series E 135mm f/2.8s but has a far inferior built quality, although optically the more economical offering does provide surprisingly good optical performance. Chromatic aberrations can be distracting, and  there is some loss of detail and contrast for distant subjects

AI-S - The descendant of AI AI-S lenses added a pair of mechanical features necessary for both automatic and semi-automatic exposure functions of the Nikon F4, F501/N2020, F301/N2000 and FA camera
