All the good things you hear about this 105mm lens is entirely true
You will be super impressed with the results from this lens. At any aperture, this baby is absolutely sharp, even wide open it becomes the source of astonishing bokeh. It's a big lens, but somehow, just the perfect size, the photographer knows that it's on his camera, and mounted on an APS-C sensor body, allows for a fantastic reach.
If you are into portrait shooting, either studio or outdoors this is is the lens for you, it reaches out for good head shots, but also provides for amazing outdoor and broad body images when you have plenty of room. The 105mm f/2D also is great for street photography, and intimate detail shots of architecture.
The defocus controls, add a unique creative touch to your photos where you still want to have a crisp look using a small aperture, with certain feature of the photo blurred out.
Also this lens performs well with just about every Nikon F body ever built, The focus control supplies just the right amount of resistance to let you feel in charge and for fine focusing. it's somewhat slow on AF (especially when you're been using AF-S lenses) but it still performs in a respectable manner.

This is no lens for the event photographer, stay with your AF-S zooms for events. I'd say that the really big drawback for the 105mm lens is the expense, at around a thousand dollars, it does get a little out of average photographer's budget, but when you find it...and you shoot a lot of portraits get it, you'' be glad.
