The DSLR label generally makes reference to cameras that are similar to 35mm film format cameras, even though a few medium format cameras remain DSLRs from a technical standpoint. Therefore a DSLR is digital still image (and this is changing) camera that employees a single lens reflex apparatus. The majority of professional cameras have predominately been SLR cameras, although they were analog cameras. A dslr therefore is a camera with digital sensor that employees a mechanical mirror and pentaprism to redirect luminosity from the lens onto an optical viewfinder located on the camera' back.
DSLRs are most often favored by professional photographers for still images as they provide a precise preview of framing near the moment of shutter exposure, and for the reason that DSLRs allow a photographer to select from a diverse variety of interchangeable lens types.
A majority of DSLRs also posses a feature that provides an accurate depth of field. preview Numerous professionals also choose DSLRs for their bigger sensors (as compared to the majority of compact digital cameras). DSLRs feature sensors which are somewhat closer to the size of traditional film format cameras that a large number of today's professionals started out shooting. These bigger sensors provide for depths of field plus picture angles similar to film formats.
I know, there are some Rangefinder and EVIL cameras listed here than have no
mirror, but they are 35mm cameras and I felt they were better featured on this
page with links direct to them

 Canon DSLR Cameras
- The Canon autofocus
35 mm SLR and DSLR camera system was announced in 1987. The Canon EOS (Electro-Optical System) featuring the EOS 650 camera. EOS is still being promoted as Canon's present DSLR system. Fujifilm DSLR Cameras

RIP Fuji S5 pro as it's no longer being produced. Its been discontinued. Fuji confirmed that it's no longer being manufactured. Also they stated there's no alternative in the works and that Fuji is content to focus on their digital compact and bridge camera segment where they have good market share.
There was no replacement camera in the marketplace that could hold a candle to the S5 Pro's colors, dynamic range, and skin hues. It was the most 'SLR film like' DSLR camera in the marketplace. Those who have used this camera know just how good it performs and the amount of post processing time it saves over other cameras trying to fix a recurring problem of blown highlights

 Olympus DSLR Cameras

 Panasonic DSLR Cameras
Feb 22, 2011 - Panasonic uses the Lumix name on all of it's digital cameras, which include point & shoot versions to
DSLRs. A large number of Lumix models use lenses engineered by Leica German optical designers although they are put together in Japan, several are relabeled as Leica model cameras with cosmetically different styling. Leica previously had a comparable relationship with Minolta, where later version Leica SLRs (and a few 35mm point & shoot cameras) were based strongly on Minolta camera bodies.

Pentax and Hoya formed the Hoya Pentax HD Corporation. The main goal of Hoya was to make their medical-related business stronger by benefiting from Pentax's technologies and knowledge in the sphere of intraocular lenses, endoscopes, biocompatible ceramics, surgical loupes, etc. There was speculation at one time that the Pentax camera business would be sold after the merger.
 Ricoh 35mm Camera Knowledge Base
- In 2009, Ricoh released the Ricoh GXR, an interchangeable lens camera without bayonet. The GXR is an interchangeable unit camera system in which lenses are changed by using a slide-in mount system to attach camera units to the body. The lens, image sensor, and image processing engine are integrated into the camera units so the body itself does not contain an image sensor.

 Sigma Cameras
Feb 21, 2011 - Since 2007 Sigma has developed three DSLR cameras, including the SD9, SD10 and SD14. In 2008, Sigma also added a high end Compact Digital Camera, known as the DP1 which employs the same big image sensor that's installed in Sigma’s DSLR
cameras.
Every Sigma Camera, including SLR and DSLR camera employs the Sigma SA mount, which is mechanically
analogous to the
Pentax K mount plus it's an electrical reworked
copy of the
Canon EF lens mount lens
management system.
 Sony DSLR Cameras

On the 19th of January, 2006, Konica Minolta made an announcement that it was selling a portion of it's SLR camera operations to Sony and getting out of the photo and camera business.
Minolta introduced the a lens type mount in 1986, first identified as the A-type Bayonet which was the planet's first autofocus camera system. As a consequence, nearly all Minolta AF camera lenses mount on Sony DSLR cameras, and a large number of Sony
lenses also operate on Minolta film and
DSLRs. In 2006 during the initial announcement of the a system, Sony revealed 19 lenses, plus 2
tele-converters, with the majority being Konica Minolta lenses rebranded as Sony.
