Filter Step Up Rings

A step up ring is an adapter ring that fits on your lens that allows a lens to use filters larger than the lens filter size. For example, a 55-58 Ring allows you to put a 58mm filter onto a 55mm filter thread. You can stack rings, but remember that step-up rings of the same filter size are not equal. Some are considerably thicker than the others. If it is possible, use the thinnest ones. I also recommend that you get two filter wrenches, as they sometimes tend to get stuck and a filter wrench is the only way to get them apart.

If you have filters on your camera, whether it's a UV filter that is on the lens 99% of the time, or you change filters often, then I highly recommend getting filter wrenches. a filter wrench is of particular use in loosening my B+W Circular Polarizer because the wrench can lock onto the screw-in portion of the filter, instead of the rotating outside layer. The one time that I couldn't get my UV filter off and I didn't have the wrenches around, I really regretted it. Now I carry them with me in my camera bag all the time, since they don't take up much space. I bought these and the smaller size ones, and since there are two wrenches in each pack, I gave one set to a friend.

if you use step-up rings, you will not be able to use your lens hood, and it would be a good idea to get one of the third party lens hoods when shooting.

All step rings are made of either aluminum or brass with brass being sturdier, but heaver. Rings are made by various manufacturers. Step rings can be ordered online by clicking a link below. The first number is the lens side which is a male thread that screws into the lens. The second number is the filter size which is female thread allowing the filter to be attached √ Click for larger Step Up Rings

Brass or aluminum? Does it Matter?

Stepping ring product descriptions typically feature the words “aluminum,” “hard-anodized aluminum,” or “brass.” Knowing the material a ring is made of is an important consideration when purchasing stepping rings (and just as important when selecting filters). This is because if the threads you’re attaching are not constructed of the same metal as the stepping ring and aren't machined to the same quality standards, there is a “galling risk,” or in the colloquial of camera-repair shops, a filter jammed on the lens. √
