Lee Filters

Ultraviolet Filters Your camera won't allow you to develop clear, crisp photos if your camera lens is damaged or dirty. You can protect your thousand dollar lens with a $20 filter if you use a UV or haze filter. These thin glass filters are designed to screw onto the end of your camera lens and you can just leave them on to protect your lens. UV filters can help protect your lenses from dust, moisture and scratches. If your lens is damaged it could cost you quite a bit to repair or replace it. The filters can also give you added benefits of correction for Ultraviolet light which can show on your film as a bluish cast and can sometimes distort distant details. UV filters let you correct for the UV effect to varying degrees. They are also useful if you are shooting mountain and marine scenes, as the haze could affect the color and clarity of the photos. UV filters can be bought for about $20.
Haze Filters
Haze Filters do just what they sound like, they filter out haze which is created by minute particles of vapor and dust. Haze settles in the atmosphere and can affect distant photographic scenes. Haze forms when sunlight is scattered by minute particles of matter that exist in the air. Atmospheric conditions have an effect on the amount of haze in the air. Mist, fog, smog, smoke and clouds are all different than haze. Green and red light are scattered by haze, but not as much as ultraviolet radiation, violet and blue light. If you use filters to absorb scattered sunlight you can penetrate the haze. Any filter that can absorb scattered sunlight can be considered a haze filter.

Polarizing Filters
These filters are used to reduce or eliminate reflections. They are ideal for photographing through glass or water as the glare from water tends to be white. Polarizing filters can also reduce the effects of haze and darken the blue sky image in black and white and color photography. There are various polarizing filters available to increase color saturation in a photo without altering the hues of image colors, but there are only two principal styles. One style fits over your camera lens, while the other is made to be used over the source of light. They don't affect color, that's why polarizing filters and screens are used in both black and white and color photography. There are two pieces to a polarizer. The front part rotates so you can change the angle of polarization. If you look at the blue sky through a polarizer and rotate it, the sky appears to get darker and then lighter. These filters range in price from about $15 to $800. They come in various sizes.

Lee Circular Polarizers. Available in the following sizes: 105mm Glass Rotating Polarizer - Circular This Polarizer is attached to the filter system via a 105mm Accessory Ring which fits to the front of the filter holder. This allows the Polarizer to be rotated independently of any other filters in the holder. It is the ideal solution for landscape photography, where the combination of graduated filters and Polarizer maybe required.- 100mm x 100mm Square Glass Polarizer - Circular This Polarizer slots into the filter holder, which is then rotated to achieve the desired effect. This version is recommended for studio use, or when no other filters are required in addition to the Polarizer.

Lee Linear Polarizer. Available in the following sizes: 105mm Glass Rotating Polarizer - Linear This Polarizer is attached to the filter system via a 105mm Accessory Ring which fits to the front of the filter holder. This allows the Polarizer to be rotated independently of any other filters in the holder. It is the ideal solution for landscape photography, where the combination of graduated filters and Polarizer maybe required. - 100mm x 100mm Square Glass Polarizer - Linear This Polarizer slots into the filter holder, which is then rotated to achieve the desired effect. This version is recommended for studio use, or when no other filters are required in addition to the Polarizer.

Neutral Density Filters These filters are designed to reduce the amount of light coming through your camera lens without changing the color. Neutral density filters can reduce the assorted colors of light in the spectrum. White and colored light is transmitted through these filters and only the intensity of the light is affected. These filters are used with black and white and color film. If you have set your camera to its fastest shutter speed along with the smallest f/stop, but still can't take the photo without overexposing the film, you can use one of these filters to reduce the exposure further. The filters help to eliminate bright, washed out sections of a photo. Neutral density filters usually range in price from about $10 to $350. They are available in various sizes.
Lee Neutral Density Standard Filters All over ND standards are another filter that can be classed as essential in modern photography. These filters absorb light evenly across the visible spectrum, therefore reducing the light entering the lens without affecting the image color. Traditionally used on film for extending shutter speeds in bright conditions, they are now becoming essential to digital photographers for reducing the sensitivity of sensor chips on cameras which have relatively high minimum ISO settings. LEE have two ND standard filters that have been specifically designed for digital cameras. They are the 0.6 (2 stops) and 0.9 (3 stops) Proglass ND Standard Filters. ND Standards extend exposure times allowing for movement in an image, be it people, water, foliage or clouds. The effects, if used with care can be impressive.

0.3 Neutral Density Standard Reduces exposure by 1 stop without affecting color balance. - Also available in Neutral Density Set. - Available in the following sizes: Resin Camera Filter - Standard 100mm x 100mm Polyester Camera Filter - Standard 100mm x 100mm.

Lee ND 0.3 Filter.

Lee ND 0.6 Filter.

Lee ND 0.9 Filter.

Lee ProGlass Filter - Standard 100mm x 100mm The ProGlass ND is an extremely high quality glass ND standard filter optimised for use with digital cameras, but equally useful for film. This brand new filter uses a surface coating made from evaporated metal, and therefore provides very even absorption across the visible spectrum and through the UV and Infra Red regions. Digital SLR users need to use ND standard filters to prolong exposure times in bright conditions for landscape photography, but the excess UV and IR can cause color problems in some lighting situations. The ProGlass filter reduces any chance of false color casts, and also provides a result described as punchier on digital and film because the light forming the image is more specific to the requirements of the film or sensor.
Graduated Color Neutral Density Filters
Often, you want to balance light intensity between two areas within a scene This is important outdoors to allow more sky detail while properly exposing the foreground. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky, exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and underexposed. Graduated Color Neutral Density filters are part clear, part neutral density with a smoothly graded transition between. An ND.6-to-Clear is often best for balancing sky to foreground. The neutral gray appearance drops exposure.

Graduated Filter Sets
Lee Graduated Neutral Density Set - Before & After

Lee Graduated Neutral Density Set The Neutral Density Set can be used with both digital and film cameras. The set contains graduated resin filters that enable the photographer to adjust exposure over part of the photograph without effecting color balance. Exposure can be controlled by 1, 2 or 3 stops. For example, when photographing a landscape in which the sky is much brighter than the foreground, placing the Neutral Density part of the filter onto the sky in the frame will reduce the sky exposure without effecting the foreground. This enable cloud detail to be kept correctly exposed and avoids the “white out” effect caused by exposing for the foreground.

Lee Graduated Autumn Tint Set. This set which consists of Tobacco 2, Coral 6 and Chocolate 2 filters, can be used to create atmospheric autumnal effects. These filters have been designed both as hard graduates and standard filters, a feature that has been achieved by manufacturing the filter with the graduation line 90 mm from the top of the filter. This gives ample room for the photographer to place the colored portion of the filter either over the whole lens, as a standard, or only half-way over the lens, as a grad.

Lee Graduated Sky Set.  This set contains Sunset 2, Coral Stripe and Sky Blue 3 graduated filters, which may be used individually or in combinations to enhance sky tones in landscapes, seascapes, and general outdoor photography. The Coral Stripe is ideal for creating a warm glow on the horizon, and can be placed strategically in the frame, creating an effect across a particular object or section of the image. The sunset filter can be used to create or enhance morning and evening skies.

Lee Graduated Sunset Set The popular three-color sunset filter is now available as a set of three separate filters - Sunset red Grad, Sunset Orange Grad and Sunset Yellow Grad. This offers the photographer the flexibility and control they need to achieve the result they want, adding warmth and definition to both sky and landscape.

Lee Graduated Twilight Set For a more subtle effect the twilight set contains a paler, thinner version of Lee Filter's Coral Stripe filter. It is teamed with a Mahogany 3 Grad, which gives an ideal red sky at night effect, and a dark blue twilight filter for capturing the moment when day finally turns to night.

Combination Filters
Combinations are the secret weapon of the filter user in the know. They are grad filters with a different color at each end of the filter and although this can be any combination of colors, it will most usually be an ND and a warm up. Filters where one color covers the entire filter and another is overdyed at one end are termed a ‘with’ combination – separate colors at each end are denoted as ‘to’ combinations.

Color Conversion Filters
These filters are used to balance the color temperatures when you are using certain films under different light sources. An example of this would be using daylight film under tungsten lighting or vice versa. Color conversion filters are designed to convert the temperature of the film to light or of the light to film. This will allow all the colors to fall in proper perspective and look natural. These filters are generally available in two series:

Soft Focus Filters
Diffusion filters are used to create soften images. A diffusion filter diffuses strong light without affecting the sharpness and contrast of the image. Thus, it is different from the effect of out of focus. Diffusion filters are mainly used in portrait work. In general, small skin defects can be eliminated almost completely, and facial contrast and wrinkles are soften. To create a better result, the aperture should be opened up so that the subject can stand out well against the background

Lee Glass Soft Focus Filter Designed for the portrait, wedding or studio photographer, the Glass Soft Focus Filter forms part of the extensive range of LEE creative effects filters. The Glass Soft Focus filter gives a gentle, flattering effect, which is not obviously noticeable unless compared with an unfiltered shot. It has minimal effect on contrast and does not overpower the image. Changes in aperture or focal length will not have an adverse effect. As well as being used indoors the Filter can be used just as well outdoors by landscape photographers. It can be used to soften foreground objects and can give a pleasing almost 3D effect to the image.

Lee Net Soft Focus Filters. Based on Net filters commonly used in cinematography, these filters provide a subtle soft focus effect while also increasing (black net) or decreasing (white net) contrast. If required the selective hole can be slid into frame to provide an unaffected clear centre effect. The Black Net 1 has an approximate exposure increase of ½ stop. Whilst the Black Net 2 has an approximate exposure increase of 1 stop.

Color Compensating Filters
Color compensating filters are sometimes referred to as CC filters. They are used to adjust the overall color balance received from color films, especially in slide film. Improper color cast can occur in your photos without one of the color compensating filters. The filters are generally used to color balance lights such as fluorescent, tungsten, and mercury-vapor and also to bounce light that is reflected from colored surfaces and objects.

Lee Filters for Black and White Photography
A colored filter used in Black and White photography will lighten any color that is similar to its own, and darken other colors. A red filter for instance, will make a red post box appear almost white and blue sky as almost black as the relevant colors are either transmitted or absorbed. Green filters are popular for lightening foliage or grass and blue filters are often used to enhance skin tones and texture in portraiture, as they will darken pinks and reds. Pale colors have a subtle effect whereas dark hues effect the image dramatically.

Long Exposure Filters
Long exposure filters are used to extend the length of an exposure (shutter speed). Extending the shutter speed allows anything that is moving in your image to become blurred or ghost like. Subjects such as clouds, waterfalls, rivers and the sea work particularly well. However the effect is not limited to landscapes, the filter can also be used on cityscapes to blur people or roads and motorways to blur traffic. Check availability, sizes & current prices at

Infrared Filters
Infrared filters are made to block mid infrared wavelengths while allowing visible light to pass through. They are sometimes referred to as heat absorbing filters and are ideal at cutting through haze. These types of filters are commonly used to prevent unnecessary heating in items which have bright incandescent light bulbs. Examples of such devices are slide projectors and overhead projectors. You can also get near infrared filters. These types of filters commonly are used in video cameras to compensate for the high sensitivity of the camera's sensors to near-infrared light. Infrared filters can range in price from about $20 to $450. They come in various sizes, styles and brands.

Lee #87 Infrared Filter. This filter is great for creating infra-red effects with both digital and film cameras.
