Gelatin camera filters are square in shape - some come with rounded corners - and are cheaper than glass filters. They slide into an attachment that goes on the front of your lens. This filter holder has interchangeable adapter screw rings that allow you to use the holder with lenses of different diameters. Such rings are very cheap (typically about $5.00) and so a gelatin-based camera filter system ends up being cheaper than multiple glass filters. However, gelatin is easily scratched, so you need to be careful not to damage the filters.
There are a huge number of gelatin effects filters available. Glass graduated filters should never be used for two reasons:

Black & White Photography Filters
Filters are often used in black and white photography as black and white are actually produced as tones of gray. Filters are used to make the gray tones look like the original scene.
The sky and clouds often blend together in black and white photos as white, so filters are used to separate the two. A red filter can darken blue objects more than white objects. So if you use this filter the sky will look black in the photo and the clouds will still be white.

Color Compensating Filters
Color compensating filters are sometimes referred to as CC filters. They are used to adjust the overall color balance received from color films, especially in slide film.
Improper color cast can occur in your photos without one of the color compensating filters. The filters are generally used to color balance lights such as fluorescent, tungsten, and mercury-vapor and also to bounce light that is reflected from colored surfaces and objects.

Kodak Magenta
CC10M Color Compensating (Color Correction)
Act specifically on relatively narrow bands of color. That is why they do not come in two color variants (bluish and reddish) like conversion filters do. Instead, they come in three primary additive colors and their three secondary colors (which can be interpreted as the primary colors of subtractive mixing) - each color comes in practical density steps.
