Cokin Special Effects Filters

Cokin Filter System

T he Cokin System consists of filter holders, filter rings and the actual filters. The filters and holders come in four different sizes, A Series, P Series, Z-Pro Series and X-Pro Series. Adapter rings are sized from 36mm to 112mm. You buy a filter holder, the filters you want and adapters for each filter thread you are going to use the filter with. Cokin Filters are mostly made from organic glass, which is shock-proof, resistant to abrasion, and meets all necessary optical and chemical requirements. Organic glass is made from CR39. The CR stands for Columbia Resin. All Cokin filters are on this page. Click to see Cokin Filter Holders

Center Spot Filters - Click on a filter for effect
Cokin 060 Incolor 1 Center Spot Resin Filter. The Cokin Incolor Center Spot filters have a clear spot in the center and allow for the portrayal of an object in diffused surroundings. This filter comes in two grades: #1 (060) and #2 (061), with the 061 having a greater effect. It consists of a gray outer area. The portion outside of the image center will be reproduced less sharp than the center. This filter is commonly used in combination with color center spot filters for a more exaggerated effect. The filter effect is directly influenced by the f-stop and the focal length. The transformation is softer with wider apertures. The size of the clear circular area increases relatively with the selection of longer focal lengths. The exposure determination should be done without the filter. If the camera has the capability of spot-metering, then one can measure with the filter in place.
Cokin 061 Incolor 2 Center Spot Resin Filter.
Cokin 062 Gray 1 Center Spot Resin Filter.  Cokin Center Spot Gray filters have a clear spot in the center and allow for the portrayal of an object in a different colored surroundings. It consists of a gray outer area. The portion outside of the image center will be reproduced darker than the center. The filter effect is directly influenced by the f-stop and the focal length. The transformation is softer with wider apertures. The size of the clear circular area increases relatively with the selection of longer focal lengths.

  Optical Effects Filters
Stars. Star filters create multiple points of light, or "stars," streaking outward from a central light source. This can make lighting within the scene take on a more glittering, glamorous appearance. This effect is produced by a series of thin lines etched into the flat optical surface of a clear filter. The size and brightness of the star lines produced are first a function of the size, shape, and brightness of the light source. Cokin offers 4,8, and 16 point star effects.  Generally, mid-range apertures or larger are sufficient to achieve a good star effect. Always test before critical situations.
Cokin 055 Star Effect (16 Point) Resin Filter.  With a 16 point filter, the many star lines may tend to overpower the rest of the image, so use it carefully.
Cokin 056 Star Effect (8 Point) Resin Filter.
Cokin 057 Star Effect (4 Point) Resin Filter.
Cokin 058 Star Effect (2 Point) Resin Filter.  Lines in one direction produce a two-pointed star, just a streak through the center of the light.
Cokin 059 Softstar Resin Filter. Star filters create multiple points of light, or "stars," streaking outward from a central light source. This can make lighting within the scene take on a more glittering, glamorous appearance. This effect is produced by a series of thin lines etched into the flat optical surface of a clear filter. This filter combines the benefits of both a star effect and soft focus filter creating a moody, dreamy atmosphere.
Dreams - Cokin Dream filters, available in three different strengths (#'s 091, 092, 093), create halos around the highlights. The effect will vary in intensity depending on the filter chosen with #093 having the greatest effect. This phenomenon becomes particularly clear when light subjects are set against a dark background, i.e., a bright bunch of white flowers set against dark curtains or streetlights against an evening sky. The advantage of this type of diffusion is that even though the effect creates a soft blending of highlights, the image remains sharp. It is recommended that you do not stop the aperture down too far. Otherwise, you will see only a double contour rather than a dreamy, romantic halo. With this filter technique, bracketing of exposures is also recommended, particularly if the subject is backlit.

Cokin 092 Dreams 2 Resin Filter.
Cokin 093 Dreams 3 Resin Filter.
Close-Ups - Have you ever wished that your lens could focus closer than it does? Imagine that you could put a magnifying glass in front of your camera's lens. Close-up lenses work in this fashion and are the simplest and least expensive method of close-up photography. They are available in different "powers" (diopters). A +1 close-up lens will allow you to focus your lens somewhat closer than it already does. A +3 close-up lens will allow you to focus closer than the +1. The maximum magnification achieved with these attachments will depend on the focal length of your lens as well as the actual close focusing capability of that particular lens.

Cokin 103 Close-up +3 Lens.
  Split Fields
Cokin 111 Split Field +1 Filter.  This filter consists of a close-up lens cut in half. Half of the filter is a close-up lens while the other half is open. With this filter, one-half of the photo receives a close-up effect while the other half is normal In this way, it is possible to have both very close and far subjects in focus at the same time Or, one-half of the picture can be out of focus for special effects.
Cokin 112 Split Field +2 Filter.  With this filter, one-half of the photo receives a close-up effect while the other half is normal In this way, it is possible to have both very close and far subjects in focus at the same time Or, one-half of the picture can be out of focus for special effects.
Cokin 113 Split Field +3 Filter.
  Multi-Images
Cokin 201 Multi Image 5x Resin Filter. This filter produces one image surrounded by four identical images. The four outer images may be moved around the periphery by rotating the filter holder. Unlike conventional screw-on prism filters which can only reproduce a central image surrounded by multiple images, the Cokin system gives you more control by allowing you to either rotate the filter holder or by shifting the filter itself i.e. the multiple images might take up only half the total image area. This is because Cokin filters are adjustable axially and laterally.
Cokin 202 Multi Image 7x Resin Filter. This filter produces one image surrounded by six identical images. The six outer images may be moved around the periphery by rotating the filter holder.
Cokin 203 Multi Image 13x Resin Filter. This filter produces one image surrounded by 12 identical images. The 12 outer images may be moved around the periphery by rotating the filter holder.
Cokin 204 Multi Image 25x Resin Filter. This filter produces one image surrounded by 24 identical images. The 24 outer images may be moved around the periphery by rotating the filter holder. Unlike conventional screw-on prism filters which can only reproduce a central image surrounded by multiple images, the Cokin system gives you more control by allowing you to either rotate the filter holder or by shifting the filter itself i.e. the multiple images might take up only half the total image area.
  Other Optical Effects
Cokin 209 Multi Parallel Resin Filter.  This Cokin attachment creates parallel multiple images. Unlike conventional filters, you can adjust the effect, either by rotating the filter holder or by shifting the filter itself. The Multi-Parallel keeps part of the image unaltered to accentuate the special effect. This filter may be used together with other Cokin filters especially stars, colored filters or other multi-image attachments. For best results, select high contrast scenes, simple shapes, i.e. trees silhouetted against the sky. It is recommended that you do not stop the lens aperture down too far. Otherwise, you will see the filter shape rather than the effect.
Cokin 216 Speed Resin Filter.  This filter adds streaks of light to give you the impression that something is rushing by at high speed. Your subject does not need to be moving. When the filter is used, part of the image will appear to remain stationary while the rest will appear "blurred" as if rushing by.
Cokin 217 Super Speed Resin Filter. This filter is even more extreme in its effect than the Speed filter (#216) in giving you the impression that something is rushing by at high speed. Your subject does not need to be moving but panning effects can be most interesting. When the filter is used on a stationary object, part of the image will appear to be motionless while the trailing end will appear to be "blurred" as if rushing by. It is recommended that you do not stop your lens aperture down too far. Otherwise, you will see the filter rather than the effect.
Cokin 218 Prism Resin Filter. The Cokin 218 Prism Filter splits light into its component wave lengths providing a multi-color effect to your photo.

  Colored Varnish & Vaselines
Cokin 080 Color Varnish Filter.  Cokin Colored Varnishes are varnishes in yellow, magenta, cyan, blue and green which are applied with a very fine brush onto the Cokin Basic Filter (#376). Just like the painter in front of his easel, portrait, landscape and still life work reflect your own vision of the world.

HINT: Use a tripod to hold the frame steady. Apply the varnish in small, closely grouped touches over all or part of the Cokin Basic Filter. The Basic Filter is cleaned with surgical spirit. Play with the aperture to modify the clarity of the effects and check the result in your viewfinder with the aid of the depth of field control.

Cokin 081 Color Vaseline Special Color Effect.  Vaseline is the simplest means of diffusion and is normally applied thinly to a neutral filter. Interesting structures can be formed by rubbing or brushing the vaseline. A palatte of four colors are included: Clear, Blue, Yellow, and Red. NOTE: This set does not come with a clear filter. The kit only contains the Vaseline.
  Zoom Filters
Cokin 185 Radial Zoom Resin Filter. This filter features numerous rings etched concentrically around a clear, one centimeter center spot. This causes bright highlights originating in the center point to be stretched out to the edges. This effect is comparable to shots taken with a zoom lens when the lens is "zoomed" during the exposure. This attachment should not be used for subjects dominated by a light sky or which feature empty expanses of snow or water in the background, as it is the unfocused areas of a lively, colorful background which emphasize the zoom effect.
Cokin 186 Rainspot Resin Filter.  A clear center spot diffusion filter that surrounds the subject with the impression of heavy rain. The filter effect is directly influenced by the f-stop and the focal length. The transformation is softer with wider apertures. The size of the clear circular area increases relatively with the selection of longer focal lengths. The exposure determination should be done without the filter.
Cokin 187 Filter
Cokin 189 Sunspot Resin Filter.  A clear center spot diffusion filter that surrounds the subject with the impression of a swirling mass of color. It is combined with a warming filter. The filter effect is directly influenced by the f-stop and the focal length. The transformation is softer with wider apertures. The size of the clear circular area increases relatively with the selection of longer focal lengths. The exposure determination should be done without the filter.
  Rainbows
Cokin 195 Rainbow 1 Resin Filter. This filter attachment is designed to create rainbows. It must be used with wide angle lenses. It is recommended that you stop your lens down to f8-11 in order to make the rainbow visible. Two rainbow filters are available: #'s195 and 196, with #196 being one-third larger.
Cokin 196 Rainbow 2 Resin Filter. This filter attachment is designed to create rainbows. It must be used with wide angle lenses. It is recommended that you stop your lens down to f8-11 in order to make the rainbow visible. Two rainbow filters are available: #'s195 and 196, with #196 being one-third larger.
  Creative Masks & Double Masks
Cokin 340 Creative Mask Resin Filter With this ingenious filter, you can create a photomontage. The Creative Mask system is used in exactly the same way as the Double Mask system (#'s 342 and 345) except that the mask and countermask are no longer central holes but other shapes custom-made by the photographer him/herself. This is accomplished by tracing patterns on pieces of colored plastic (enclosed with kit) and cutting them out with a graphics knife (not included). By adhering the different cut out patterns to a Cokin Basic filter and carefully overlapping them in your Cokin holder, the desired montage can be created. The light reading for each part of the montage must be taken without the filter in place.
Cokin 342 Double Mask 1 Resin Filter.  The Double Mask system allows you to combine two scenes in one. The effect is achieved by exposing each frame twice, one with each filter contained in the Double Mask set. One filter covers the center of the image, the other the surrounding frame. The system comes in two sizes: #342 and #345, which has a larger center spot. This double exposure can be done either by re-cocking the camera without advancing the film or by exposing the whole roll of film with the first filter and then rewinding the film to its initial position and exposing each frame again with the second filter. It is recommended that you measure the exposure without the mask in place.
Cokin 345 Double Mask 2 Resin Filter.
Cokin 376 Basic Resin Filter. The Cokin Basic filter is a neutral plastic filter used for applying a variety of finishes and materials. It can be used for the application of colored gels, vaseline, or whatever your creative instincts lead you to. If vaseline is used, the filter can either be stored, or washed and re-used.
  Double Exposure
Cokin 346 Double Exposure Resin Filter.  This special effect filter allows you to expose each half of one piece of film separately. One half of this attachment is completely black and blocks all light transmission while the other half is transparent. With the first exposure, one half of the image remains unexposed. Then, by rotating the attachment in its holder 180 degrees and using the multiple exposure feature on your camera, a second exposure is made on the unexposed half of the film. This filter can only be used with cameras that allow for multiple exposures.
  Creative Filters
Cokin 194 Gelatin Filter Holder.  This holder provides a practical way to combine gelatine filters with the Cokin filter holder system. It is a good idea to have a separate holder for each gelatine filter. The "A" Series Gel holder accepts "trimmed" 3 inch gels. The "P" Series Gel holder accepts 3 inch gel filters.
Cokin 375 Creative Resin Filter. The Cokin Creative filter #375 consists of a gelatin holder and ten acetate filters of corresponding size. These filters cannot compare with real colored filters in terms of optical quality, but they have their own particular appeal when used to create homemade filters for special effects with individual colors and shapes. When inserted halfway, they can even be used as graduated filters, if necessary. However, the aperture must be kept wide open in order to soften the transition. Two or three colors laid next to one another in stripes, held together along the edge with adhesive tape and inserted into the gelatin holder, color the picture not only with the colors used, but also in the combinations resulting from overlapping colors. The intensity and degree of the color graduation depends on the lens aperture used.
  Pre-Shaped Frames
Cokin 397 Pre-Shaped Resin Filter.  This set contains a slide-in sandwiching mount which fits into the Cokin holder. The slide-in mount accepts any of the included 10 pre-shaped black masks. These masks come in the shape of a circle, a keyhole, a heart, intersecting twin circles and an oval (two of each shape; one large, one small). As the black part of the mask blocks out the light and the center does not, the resulting photograph will be framed in that particular shape. The size and abruptness of the transition is affected by the focal length and aperture of your lens. The slide-in mount included with this set measures 85 x 85mm and fits the Cokin P series holder.
