Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Fast Prime Portrait Lens Description

Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Portrait Lens

T his lens's main advantage is it aperture. The f/1.2 aperture advantage means usable shutter speeds in very low light. When it is stopped down, other L lenses start exceeding the f/1.2 image quality. No other lens performs portraiture as well as the 85mm f/1.2 under $4000. For low light with less action, you're better off going with the 70-200 f/2.8L IS.

Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens Side View

Retaining the impressive optical performance and large aperture of the original EF 85mm f/1.2L USM, this new medium telephoto lens uses a Ring-type USM, high-speed CPU and optimized algorithms to achieve an autofocus speed approximately 1.8x faster than the original. The high-speed AF and circular aperture create a shallow depth-of-field that brings attention to the subject and blurs the background, which is ideal for portraits and weddings. The floating optical system, which includes an aspherical lens element, suppresses aberrations and ensures excellent imaging performance.

Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens Mount

Like all L series lenses, this one is built extremely solid. It may feel fairly large and bulky to those who haven't used L series lenses before. The extra bulk is comes from higher quality glass and the use of more durable materials (metal vs. plastic).

An f/1.2 lens is not usually as efficient as the same manufacture's f/1.8 or f/2 lenses, even when both are stopped down to f/5.6. the lens with the wider aperture is heaver and more expensive, so don't choose it as your standard unless you are planning a great deal of photography poor light conditions. There' plenty of reasons for using a wide aperture, but avoid buying a lens with an aperture wider than you need.
