Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Telephoto Zoom Lens Description

Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Telephoto Zoom Lens

O verall, I'd say that you get what you pay for, this is a somewhat inexpensive telephoto lens, but it's not nearly as inferior as some make it out to be. Focusing is relatively slow at (f/5.6 at 300mm), and to reliably cut down on camera shake, you're going to need a 1/500 sec shutter speed, which means that at ISO 100, you only can lose one stop of illumination under "Sunny 16" conditions before you must decide on making some concessions to get your image. As a result, shots into the shade, or performed under the softer lighting conditions of the morning or evening will unsurprisingly compel you to find the middle ground of a high ISO grainy look or the bulk of a tripod to make up for this lens's lack of optical speed. If you always shoot in bright sunshine, you'll be all right.

Even though a tripod is a great tool, most people don't like to carry one, so the solutions are; accept grain in enlargements, not take certain photos, spend more money to go to a faster lens, or some combination of the above.  The least expensive substitute is to use a tripod, and I'd recommend the IS version if you have the extra money.

If you need a fast low light lens, this isn't it. If your primary objective is to take pictures in available light situations such as weddings and concerts, then get the 80-200mm f/2.8 or the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS instead.

Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Lens Mount

The lightest 4x telephoto zoom lens in its class. Ideal for some sports, portraiture, animals, etc. The telephoto effect can make the picture look compressed or have excellent background blur. At the 300mm focal length, you can fill the frame with a postcard from 4.9' away. The Micro-USM autofocus motor is quick, compact and quiet.

This compact and lightweight Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM telephoto zoom lens is ideal for shooting slower sports, portraits, and wildlife.

Features

The lens is distinguished by a newly developed micro ultra-sonic monitor (USM) that makes autofocusing quicker and quieter, along with an improved zoom mechanism that includes a silver ring on the front for a luxurious touch. The micro USM makes this version of the lens particularly suitable for applications that require a fast autofocus, such as sporting events or wildlife shoots. Best of all, the USM version shares many of the same features that makes the non-USM lens so popular, such as a compact size, a close focusing range, and accessory compatibility. As with all Canon lenses, this unit carries a one-year warranty.
