Canon EOS Digital Photography Photographic Lenses Quick Snap guide to SLR Lenses

A small prime lens that is light weight and inconspicuous. It's very sharp and it manages fine macro photography or standard walking-around shots. I very rarely leave this lens behind when I'm out because I never know when there might be a great macro shot. it doesn't come with a hood or a case, but if you keep the lens in a decent camera bag you don't need a lens case. (Canon must make a fortune selling those hoods at the prices they charge.) it does not have the L-series lens build, but it is still solid enough for serious use but not abuse as it is mostly plastic on the outside. This lens hunts while auto focusing, usually in low light. but there is a work-around. [g index]

If you know you will take portraits or images farther away, then just manually pre-focus the lens in that range. If you know you're taking macro shots, then pre-focus toward the macro side. (There is no focus limiter like the Canon Telephoto zooms.) Then just let the autofocus device fine tune the focus. Given that this lens is so versatile (encompassing the ability to take both macro and distant shots), the autofocus must frame the optics a great deal from near to far. So if your focus starts far off, it takes an extra second for the computer to decipher whether you are trying to focus close or far. So it hunts. A ballpark pre-focus accelerates the autofocus once you are ready to take the image. Once pre-focused, the lens has no problem autofocusing even in low light.
