S erious Glass for Serious Photographers. The build quality is exceptional and the lens weighs more than you'd expect, as a result. At f/1.2 the depth of field is minimal and the auto-focusing with USM is totally silent. The 72mm filter diameter is a big stretch from the 50mm f/1.4's 58mm, and is in tune with the filter size on my other lenses. If you are a casual photographer shooting pictures of your family, the f/1.4 will do nicely. Possibly you won't even notice any difference. But if you blow up and print your shots, or sell your images, then you will see a most distinct dissimilarity. The f/1.8 has 5 blades, the f/1.4 has 8, and the f/1.2 also has 8-but the blades are curved to produce silky smooth background/foreground bokeh when the lens is at maximum aperture. Of course, the biggest revelation is how dark it can be while this lens still functions.
