F or the times when you want to travel light and only take one lens, this is the lens. Through its entire focal range, it does a great job. Its performance is exceptional considering it's not an "L" grade lens. This lens is truly a 'must have' if you don't have lots of cash to spend. Simply put, it is an excellent performer and looks to be the best value. For the money I really don't think that you can beat this lens. It focuses quickly, it is really quiet while doing it, and it is sharp enough considering the price. Plus it has full time manual focus, which is a really big plus for a lens in this price range. If you need a low light lens, this isn't it. If your primary objective is to take pictures in low light situation such as weddings and concerts, then get the 24-70mm IS f/2.8L USM or the or the 70-200mm VR f/2.8 instead.

The most important advantage a zoom lens has is versatility. Using my zoom lens I can rapidly and appropriately frame and capture a fleeting opportunity. Zooms can also capture many different framings of the same subject within seconds. A fixed focal length lens photographer may still be sneaker-zooming (which also changes perspective) to the right distance when the subject fades away - or is no longer in that adorable pose. A subject with a rapidly changing distance also favors a zoom lens.

The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM is a standard zoom lens that retains the optical capability of Canon's previous EF 28-105mm USM lens but with a refined exterior design. The lens is distinguished by a ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM) drive that provides silent, high-speed autofocusing, along with full-time manual focusing. The 1.6-foot close-focusing distance, meanwhile, lets you take great close-up portraits and nature shots. A good match for the Canon EOS A2/A2e or ELAN 7 series cameras with built-in flashes, the EF 28-105mm lens is an excellent zoom lens for everyday use.

Inconsistant results with 2004 Rebel, August 21, 2009

By R.P.D. "digital ad man" (New York City)

I have found the image results from this lens in combination with my 2004 Canon Rebel to be incredibly inconsistent. It can not take the same picture twice in a row. Color values, saturation, and particularly focus vary widely with each shot, even in multi-shot mode.

This lack of predictability makes capturing images a crap-shoot at best. More than a few times I have been disappointed with the results. I would not recommend this lens, particulary for older Digital Rebels.

Great value lens with good quality, June 8, 2009

By A. Pacheco (hawaii)

After purchasing my first dslr (Canon Rebel XSI) I quickly discovered that the kit 18-55 just didn't have the range I needed. I somehow landed a job doing freelance work for the local newspaper the same day I got my camera, so I needed something that would give me more versatility on a very limited budget. After reading the reviews I ended up with this, and I've been pleased.

Granted, this is not an "L" lens, but at this price I wouldn't expect that. Also, if you have shaky hands or take a lot of photos in low light this may not be the right lens for you. It might be worth looking into the 55-250 IS. In decent light this lens takes beautiful photos, and I've had many successful results with it. It is great outdoors (I recommend purchasing a lens hood).

I recently purchased my first "L" lens--the 17-40mm, and while it's a great lens, the 28-105 still lives on my camera for its versatility. And even though I'm now in the market for something with IS, faster, and with more range, I think I'll still be hanging on to this one for awhile. If I wasn't serious about photography as a career and used this as just a hobby lens I would be thrilled. If you want something affordable with decent quality, I highly recommend this.
