Canon EOS Digital Photography Photographic Lenses Quick Snap guide to SLR Lenses

O kay, so if you think as I do and believe the standard 18-55, 17-55, or 17-50 zooms should be a little longer for some outdoor occasions, but telephoto lenses are too long, and you yearn for somewhere in between, then there are quite a few other lenses to choose from. This includes; the Canon 17-85mm, Canon 28-135mm, Canon 24-85, Canon 28-105mm, and the Canon 24-105mm. While I am fond of the Canon 24-105mm L lens, it is very expensive (4 to 5 times the cost of this lens), heavy, and large. The lenses that start at 28mm are not quite wide-angle enough, so the 24-85mm is what's left. [reindex g]

Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Zoom Lens

Description

The focal distance of this lens is almost ideal for everyday photography, because gives you an opportunity to shoot from landscapes (24-50mm) to portraiture (50-85mm) with a like usefullness and quality. This lens is compact and lightweight and good in all but one aspect.  If you need a low light lens, this isn't it. If your primary objective is to take pictures in low light situation such as weddings and concerts, then spend more money and get the 24-70mm IS f/2.8L USM instead.

If you just get pleasure taking pictures and want a good, "walk around" lens that's not unreasonably heavy, you'll love this lens, and I am envious of you. This is an ultra-wide zoom lens with portrait-length telephoto capability. By having multiple lens groups move during zooming, the lens is compact and lightweight. The aspherical element suppresses distortion. High contrast is maintained at all focal lengths and sharp images are obtained.

Features

Built into the system is a replica aspherical lens element that minimizes optical distortions to give you sharp images. The flare-cutting diaphragm helps the lens produce a high-contrast image, even in tough lighting. Its high zoom ratio of 3.5x allows you to take tighter shots of your subjects. It's fully compatible with all EOS cameras.
