T he only factor precluding me from giving out an outright recommendation to this EF 24-70mm f/2.8L zoom lens is the recent release of the Canon 24-105mm f/4.0L IS. The latter lens costs about the same and has some noteworthy advantages. It is .7 in shorter, .2mm narrower and .6 lbs. lighter. It has a 3rd generation IS that gives you a 3-stop shutter speed advantage when shooting handheld. From using the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, I know that image stabilization is an especially welcome feature when shooting handheld at slow shutter speeds. And, obviously, the 24-105mm adds an extra 35mm of focal length on the long end.

The 24-70mm is better than the 24-105mm in one way: It's a faster lens. That translates into the following benefits: At f/4.0, the 24-105mm cannot stop subject motion blur as well in low-light situations where the 24-70mm's f/2.8 can provide you a shutter speed that is twice as fast. Note: IS has no effect on subject motion blur, only on camera shake. If bokeh (background blur) is important to you, the 24-70mm will offer a slight advantage over the 24-105mm because of its wider aperture. A wider aperture also helps a camera focus a little better in low light.

This Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM standard zoom lens does what many pros thought couldn't be done - replace the previous L-series 28-70 f/2.8 lens with something even better. Extended coverage to an ultra-wide-angle 24mm makes it ideal for digital as well as film shooters, and the optics are even better than before with two Aspherical elements and a totally new UD glass element. It's now sealed and gasketed against dust and moisture, and a new processing unit makes the AF faster than ever.

Description

Incorporates many advanced and exclusive Canon Lens Technologies to provide improved performance, including the use of two different types of Aspherical lens elements, and a totally new UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) glass element for obtaining sharper image quality. Canon's original ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) makes autofocusing fast, accurate and silent, down to a reduced minimum focusing distance of just 15 inches. The Lens is now sealed against dust and moisture

Features

This lens replaces the previous high quality L-series 28-70mm f/2.8 lens, with a lens of even greater caliber. The range has been extended to cover an ultra-wide angle of 24mm, which makes it ideal for digital as well as film shooters, and the optics are even better than before with two Aspherical elements and a totally new UD glass element. It's now sealed and gasketed against dust and moisture, and a new processing unit makes the AF faster than ever.

• Internal Focusing
The internal focusing mechanism allows the front of the lens to remain stationary and to easily accommodate specialty filters, such as polarizing filters.

• Two Aspherical Elements
A lens design incorporating elements ground so the curve of the surface does not describe an arc of a circle. Especially useful in reducing distortion in wide angle lenses.

• UD Element
UD glass is one of the new technologies to open new possibilities to develop the zoom lenses with low weight and high optical performance. UD elements make it possible to correct chromatic aberrations while maintaining low weight.
