Engineered Specifically for EF-s
Digital SLR APS-C Cameras
The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 USM IS may not be a flawless lens
but it keeps up with the Canon users very high expectations.
The resolution numbers are rated right up there with the
absolute best for being an APS-C normal zoom lens. The
resolution in the center is generally right on even mounted
on the Canon 50D while the borders stay an exceptional
The deformation traits are quite normal for a zoom in this reach (somewhat prominent barrel deformation @ 17mm, restrained pincushion deformation @ 55mm) although lateral CAs are untypically restrained.
Vignetting although unfortunate
is a problem at f/2.8 and the
bokeh quality (portrayal of the out-of-focus blur) is lacking in significance when in in critical circumstances. The len's build quality darn good but there's too much plastic for its price tag. Even the much less expensive EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L sports a magnesium-alloy outer shell. All told the 17-55 is obviously a step up from other standard Canon zoom lenses although a pricey one.
Aspherical and AD elements provide imposing image quality throughout the entire zoom range, Large circular aperture delivers a shallow field depth; ring-style ultra-sonic motor (USM) mage
stabilizing lens groups move to counterweigh any picture shake even in poor lighting Ir measures just 3.3 inches around, 4.4 inches in length and; weighs only 22.8 ounces.
It's a large-aperture lens engineered specifically for EF-s digital SLR APS-C cameras, and provides a super wide to short tele-zoom ratio, containing in-lens Image Stabilization. Its focal length is a 35mm film equivalent approx. 27-88mm.
It features the latest Canon optical Image Stabilizer engineering, offering up to 3-stops image blur compensation created by slow shutter speeds and camera shake to ensure crisp. clear images, even in poor light.
Specifically designed for digital photography, it has lens elements that are especially shaped and has what Canon calls Super Spectra coatings for suppressing flare and ghosting, which are often caused by reflections coming off the camera's digital sensors.
Note: Canon Extension Tubes EF 12 II and EF 25 II only mount on this lens.
Note! Lens not appropriate for 35mm SLR film cameras or digital SLR camera featuring image sensors larger than APS-C, only fits on EOS Digital Rebel cameras or Canon 20D, 30D, 40D and 50D, DSLR cameras
