Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 III USM Zoom
All the attributes you need for over all shooting, easily slips into your camera bag, or just mounted to your camera it weighs very little and has a quick and exact autofocus. attached to a sturdy tripod it captures excellent images with very little noise, featuring crystal clear photos.
A very practical and take able
telephoto zoom. With five zoom groups, the length is barely 4.8 in. (121.5mm). Featuring rear focusing, allowing the lens to stay the same length and does not rotate while focusing. Any filter adjustments therefore stay intact. It also allows for quiet and quick
auto focusing. it's at it's best stopped down around f/8 or f/11, with good lighting or using
fast film (or
DSLR camera using at 400+ ISO).
Not useful for
poor-light situations, although could be used for indoor close-up flash portraits. The build doesn't compare with the "L-series" quality either, although with the steady release of brand new lenses, it's refreshing to discover a
sensibly-priced zoom lens with endurance. The EF 100-300 happens to be one of those few lenses, having kept it's position in the Canon lineup for more than a decade.
The EF 100-300mm zoom concludes a fusion of up-to-the-minute electronics, mechanical accuracy, and optical distinction. The EF lens mount which is entirely electronic is distinctive in the company of 35mm SLR cameras, functionally silently and dependably as a consequence of removing of mechanical couplings. Also It contains a custom-engineered autofocus motor with microprocessor, and encompasses ultrasonic motor engineering, aspherical elements, flourite crystal plus ultralow-dispersion glass. It is engineered for mounting on all EOS cameras, providing auto & manual focus functions, rear focusing, and an affordable price.

There's a reason it's been around for a while, May 17, 2009

With the constant release of new lenses, it's impressive to find a reasonably-priced zoom with staying power. The Canon EF 100-300 is one of those lenses, maintaining it's position in their lineup for over a decade. While it cannot compete with the L-series lenses, especially the 70-200 f/2.8, it offers a great range within a reasonable price. On a DSLR with low-noise at higher ISO setting, bringing up the ISO is a fair trade for the performance it offers. True, I drool when I look at the 70-200 models, but this one has been a constant and trustworthy companion for events, especially when shooting outdoor events where I prefer a low profile for more effective candid shots. While my next purchase will probably be a 70-200, there's no way I would give this one up.
I'm no expert, but I really love this lens..., May 19, 2008

I'm no professional, but I love taking photos. I have the XTi and only have two lenses so far: the 28-105 and this one, the 100-300. In reading several reviews, I seem to not be alone in this setup.
Overall, I absolutely love this lens and haven't had any problems with it in the six months I've had it. My images stay pretty sharp throughout the zoom range and I rarely have light problems. Most notably, I recently used this lens to shoot an evening choir concert at the church where I work. Despite the low light and the distance, I was able to get some well balanced, crisp, and well-lit shots of the people singing.
If you're just the average joe-photographer looking for a great telephoto zoom, I'd very highly recommend this lens. If you're any sort of professional, read the more intelligent reviews around here for the information you're looking for.
